Hill-Kelly Movies in the Park Series Continues July 19


This summer's FREE Hill-Kelly Movies in the Park series continues on Friday, July 19 at Community Maritime Park with "Avengers: Infinity War." The first 100 children get to make a free superhero mask with My Pensacola Credit Union.

Bring your blankets and chairs then spread out on the lawn to watch a family-friendly movie underneath the stars. Movies begin at sunset, and free event parking is available at Community Maritime Park and City Hall.

Enjoy Classic Rock at Blues Angel Music Blues on the Bay


Sit back and enjoy a bit of classic rock with local club favorites CrossTown at the Blues Angel Music Blues on the Bay concert Sunday, July 14 at Community Maritime Park. The show starts at 6 p.m., and admission is free.

The proposed Fiscal Year 2020 budget for the City of Pensacola is now available online, along with a Budget in Brief informational guide for citizens. 
Some highlights of the approximately $245 million Fiscal Year 2020 proposed budget include:
  • No millage rate increase
  • Estimated $104.2 million in Local Option Sales Tax revenue to cover a variety of items, including:
    • Pensacola Police and Pensacola Fire vehicles
    • $3.9 million in upgrades and refurbishments to some of the City’s parks, community centers and facilities
    • $1 million for Public Works to address City-wide ADA improvements, energy conservation and efficiency improvements, intersection and sidewalk improvements, and the continuation of the Pavement Management Program
Two City Council budget workshops have been scheduled for Council to review the proposed budget:
  • Wednesday, July 24, 1-5 p.m., Hagler/Mason Conference Room, City Hall, 222 W. Main St., second floor 
  • Thursday, July 25, 9 a.m., Hagler/Mason Conference Room, City Hall, 222 W. Main St., second floor

City Hires Neighborhoods Administrator


The City of Pensacola has selected Lawrence Powell to fill the Neighborhoods Administrator position, responsible for a variety of duties related to the Office of Neighborhoods.

Powell’s anticipated start date is Monday, July 15, and he will work under the direction of the Mayor and City Administrator.

“I’m really looking forward to being a team player and a collaborative spirit, not only within the staff, but within the community at large,” Powell said. “When you’re dealing with our neighborhoods, it has to be a relationship of transparency and integrity, because our citizens depend on our city government to take care of them, to hear them and respond to them.”

Pensacola International Airport Receives $3.8 million from FAA 


Pensacola International Airport will receive $3,754,291 in federal money for improvements.

In an announcement on July 9, U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao listed Pensacola as one of 11 Florida airports to receive funding this cycle. 

The grant comes from the Federal Aviation Administration and will be used to improve airport drainage, construct a building and acquire an aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle.

Winning Top State Awards!


The Florida Small Business Development Center at the University of West Florida was named Region of the Year at the Florida SBDC Network’s annual conference on Tuesday, June 25. The Florida SBDC at UWF was honored out of nine regional host partner universities and colleges.

The Florida SBDC at UWF played a critical role in helping small business owners recover following Hurricane Michael, helping businesses between Apalachicola and Panama City Beach to Marianna and Chipley secure over $21 million in Emergency Bridge Loans, many of which were approved in less than a week.

Bill Bond League Teams Win State Championships


Congratulations to the Bill Bond League 12U and 11U baseball teams on winning state championships over the July Fourth weekend! Both teams beat out their opponents in the Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth State Tournaments on Sunday, July 7 and will advance to the Southeast Regionals the week of July 16 in Wilmington, North Carolina. As Florida state champs, the 11U team has already secured a spot in the Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth World Series as tournament host. The tournament will be held in Jensen Beach starting Aug. 3. Four Bill Bond teams played in the state championship tournament including 15U, 12U, 11U, and 10U. Congratulations to all participants!

Make Plans Now for After School Care with the City!


We’re just a little over halfway through summer, so it’s time to start making plans for after school care. City of Pensacola Parks and Recreation offers after school programming with activities that build healthy and happy kids through active play, fitness and sports, dance and drama instruction, computer exploration and S.T.E.A.M. activities. The program is provided by caring and friendly staff at four locations: Cobb, Fricker, Gull Point and Woodland Heights Resource Centers. New this year, the YMCA of Northwest Florida will offer their after school programming at the Vickrey Resource Center as part of the city’s land swap agreement.
