The property historically served as a railroad freight terminal, with a commercial pier extending from the bulkhead. Erected in the early 1900s, the Frisco Docks were completely destroyed in a 1966 fire, but more than 500 pilings remain submerged underwater. Piling removal will remediate the bay bottom of potential contamination.
Once the pilings are removed, this property can serve as a platform for further economic development for the City of Pensacola and provide additional growth opportunities for the west side.
City of Pensacola’s funding partners include the Environmental Protection Agency, West Florida Regional Planning Council, Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Council of Development Finance Agencies. PPM Consultants, Inc. based out of Gulf Breeze is the lead contractor overseeing the project. H.G.Harders and Son, Inc. is the subcontractor responsible for piling removal. Other contractors include Wood PLC, Pate Stevedore, Cardno and Port of Pensacola.

City completes more than a mile in repairs as part of sidewalk project
The City of Pensacola’s Public Works and Facilities Department has been hard at work tackling the list of sidewalk repairs and added curb ramps identified in a sidewalk conditions survey and inventory. To date, 6,217 linear feet of sidewalk have been repaired/replaced and 147 ADA curb ramps have been added.
In 2017, Public Works undertook an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Sidewalk Assessment, during which the City’s existing sidewalk inventory was evaluated for ADA compliance. The survey identified approximately 28,100 feet of sidewalks for repairs and a need for 2021 new curb ramps in order to achieve an acceptable level of ADA compliance based upon the report findings.
Sidewalks were prioritized for repairs and improvements based on their “audit or meta score” in the survey. This prioritized list is the City’s current master sidewalk improvement project list. The sidewalk repairs are estimated to be completed by 2024 and ADA-compliant curb ramps by 2026.
“It really is amazing all the stuff our Public Works and Facilities Department can do,” Mayor Grover Robinson told reporters during his weekly press conference on Monday. “They showed me some new products that we have that are really making it cost effective for us to deal with our sidewalks. I really appreciate them being creative and looking at different ways to get things fixed.”
“This is a great program to directly benefit our pedestrian community by bringing the City into ADA compliance and promoting City-wide walkability,” Public Works and Facilities Director Derrik Owens said. “It is extremely important that we continue to maintain the valuable infrastructure we have to provide for safe and convenient routes for our pedestrian traffic.”

Pensacola Fire takes part in multi-jurisdictional rescue drillsPensacola Fire Department has been taking part in multi-jurisdictional rescue drills at two Pensacola Bay Bridge construction sites.

On May 7, drills were conducted at Skanska USA's production facility near the Bayou Chico Bridge on Barrancas Avenue. Emergency responders practiced three different methods of removing a patient from an elevated position.
On May 8 and 9, drills were conducted on the new Pensacola Bay Bridge currently under construction. One of the drills included a scenario where firefighters responded to a construction worker who fell over a jersey barrier and was dangling from safety. Gulf Breeze Fire Department and Escambia County Fire Rescue also took part in the drills.
