Tall Ship Lynx arrives at Plaza de LunaThe Tall Ship LYNX has arrived in Pensacola and will be offering a variety of programs and opportunities.
LYNX, America’s Privateer, hails from Nantucket, Massachusetts and is on an educational mission. The Lynx Educational Foundation, owners and operator of the ship, built at Rockport Marine in Rockport Maine, launched in 2001 was purposely built as a platform for Maritime Education. LYNX, a National Treasure, is the finest example of a War of 1812 Privateer in America. The education programs are designed and accepted to Florida Best Researched Practices to State Standards and are free to participating schools.
Operations will run through March 11, 2019.
Free deck tours will be offered Tuesday through Friday 12 to 2 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Ticketed Public sailings are available Wednesday through Sunday 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., but reservations are required.
LYNX will be located at Plaza de Luna located at 100 Palafox Street.

Registration for 2019 Pensacola Citizens Academy now open
The City of Pensacola is now taking registrations for enrollment in the 2019 Pensacola Citizens Academy.
The 2019 Academy will run from until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evenings, beginning March 5, and continue through April 30. Dinner is provided to registered participants each academy night.
The Academy is a nine-week-long, hands-on, interactive inside look to the inner workings of the City of Pensacola and its Departments. Tours and demonstrations make the course both informative and fun. Best of all it's free and there are no exams to take!
Here are four reasons why you should participate in the Pensacola Citizens Academy:
1. Get a Closer Look
The Pensacola Citizens Academy features site visits, field demonstrations, and department tours. You’ll get a one-of-a-kind opportunity to take a closer look at the City’s services and initiatives. The eight week program is an ideal way to learn about the tremendous efforts of City employees that make Pensacola “The Upside of Florida.”
2. Take a Backstage Tour of the City
The Pensacola Citizens Academy gives you a private tour of Pensacola, including inside looks at City Hall, Community Venues, the Pensacola Police Department and the Pensacola Fire Department.
3. Develop a New Perspective
You have a chance to step into to the role of a firefighter or a police officer and see what life is like in their departments.
4. Discover Ways to Get Involved
The program offers insight into ways that you can get involved in your community, highlighting volunteer opportunities as well as City Boards.

The Pensacola Supplier Diversity Exchange had another great showing of local business members at the event February 5 at the Sanders Beach-Corrine Jones Resource Center.
The event was a combined effort of the Office of Supplier Diversity Exchange, City of Pensacola and Gulf Coast Minority Chamber of Commerce. It hosted a panel of experts including Hosea Goodwyn with the City of Pensacola, Escambia County, Escambia County School District and University of West Florida to allow attendees the opportunity to ask questions on the process of request for proposals (RFPs). Small business owners were able to market their goods and services directly to local and state buyers in one-one-one interviews.

“We wanted to make sure that what we’re doing for business is open for all people to participate and be inclusive,” Mayor Robinson said at the event. “I look out here and I see what I think is the backbone of what our American system is, which is a lot of small business.”
Gulf Coast Minority Chamber of Commerce President Brian Wyer said he considers the Pensacola Supplier Diversity Exchange to be one of the most successful in the state. According to data provided by the Office of Supplier Diversity Exchange, Pensacola’s event in 2018 had the third most attendees in the state. Though Pensacola was not the largest attended event, Wyer said it had the most organizations to attend.
Wyer said he is mostly proud of the of the attendance rate of people who signed up.
Wyer said at the 2018 event, 95 percent of people who registered for it also attended, which makes it the highest rate in the state.
"We only had five percent reduction," People who registered for this event and attended, 95 percent, that's phenomenal."

Uniform Crime Report numbers for 2018
The FDLE has compiled the crime stats for calendar year 2018 for the City of Pensacola. These numbers are in comparing 2017 to 2018.
Violent crimes are down in the city 11.8 percent. The property crime rate is down 4.2 percent, and the clearance rate of crimes reported to the Pensacola Police Department is up 11.8 percent.
A new statistic being reported by the FDLE is the amount of police officers who were assaulted during the same calendar year. In 2018, 41 Pensacola police officers were assaulted while doing their jobs.
When Chief Tommi Lyter became Chief of Police in May of 2017, reducing violent crimes was his top priority, and continues to be today. His focus is to address problem areas and respond immediately. Officers then stay in the affected area(s) no matter how long it may take, and the underlying causes have been addressed. “Those who choose to commit violent acts on the citizens of Pensacola will be met with a heavy response from the Pensacola Police Department” said Chief Lyter.
Mayor Grover Robinson added “The citizens of Pensacola have experienced a declining overall crime rate for several years. I support the crime reducing strategies Chief Lyter and his officers are using, and I greatly appreciate the very difficult work these men and women do, and the risks they take every day for all of us.”

Put on your dancing shoes, ballroom classes are back!
Classes at Gull Point and Sanders Beach will begin again soon. Classes have been on a break since the holidays and with Gull Point reopening they are ready to start back up.

They are planning to hold an Open House for their classes on Feb 26th at Gull Point and Feb 27th at Sanders Beach-Corinne Jones Resource Center so people can come in and see the facilities, mingle and take a quick lesson. Classes will begin the following week.
