Mississippi Blues Marker coming to Belmont-Devilliers

The Mississippi Blues Commission will honor the legacy of the Blues in Pensacola with an unveiling of a Mississippi Blues Marker to be part of the Mississippi Blues Trail.

On Thursday, January 17, blues historian Jim O’Neal will host a lecture at 5:30 p.m. at Voices of Pensacola. O’Neal is a research director and lead writer with the Mississippi Blues Trail and has helped organize a number of blues festivals. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2002.

The marker unveiling will be held on Friday, January 18 at the intersection of Belmont and DeVilliers streets at 4 p.m. The ceremony will feature a dedication from the Director of the Mississippi Blues Commission, Kamel King, Mississippi Senator Terry Burton, Pensacola Mayor Grover Robinson, Escambia County Commissioner Lumon May, Steve Hayes of Visit Pensacola and Eddie Todd of Belmont-DeVilliers Neighborhood Association.

There will be a live performance from Belmont All-Star band with special guests following the conclusion of the dedication.

Keep Pensacola Beautiful launches “40 Trees for 40 Years” campaign

Keep Pensacola Beautiful held their first tree planting event on Sunday, January 13 at Bruce Beach for their new initiative, “40 Trees for 40 Years.”

Keep Pensacola Beautiful, the volunteer group whose mission is to beautify public spaces, launched the initiative for their 40^th anniversary. The group will be planting 40 trees throughout Escambia County.

Councilwoman Ann Hill attended the event at Bruce Beach. She and her family adopted three trees.

“It's just so great to be part of the transformation of Bruce Beach,” Councilwoman Hill said. “I am also pleased to be assigned to be City Council liaison to this dedicated group!”

Keep Pensacola Beautiful will be planting trees at locations like Olive Road, Treasure Hills Park, Lincoln Park, Englewood Park. A ribbon cutting event will be held on January 19 at 2751 N H Street from 3-3:30 p.m to celebrate the conclusion of their initiative.

One tree generates $100 on average of benefits to the community each year. They add value by reducing stormwater runoff, improving air quality, reducing carbon dioxide, improving energy savings and increasing property values.

Mayor Grover Robinson climbed 177 steps to honor a historic place on a historic day.

On Friday, January 11, The Pensacola Lighthouse and Museum on board NAS Pensacola celebrated its 160^th anniversary complete with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by dozens of guests.

Mayor Robinson helped kickoff the event by serving as a special guest speaker. He was joined by other elected officials like Escambia County Commissioner Robert Bender.
