Hayward reaches agreement with AFSCME
Mayor Ashton Hayward announced the City reached a tentative agreement regarding future compensation and benefits with bargaining unit employees represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This agreement will provide for the largest increase allocated to this bargaining unit group since the inception of their union.
The employees represented by this bargaining agent work throughout the City in skilled trade occupations such as equipment operators and other manually intensive jobs. The employees maintain roads, parks, ball fields, gas lines, provide sanitation and fleet services as well as performing a host of other tasks.
Under Mayor Hayward’s leadership, the City has not gone to impasse. As a result of this agreement, all contracts are complete and current with none outstanding when the next administration takes charge.

City awarded $250K to remove pilings and submerged land in Pensacola Bay
The West Florida Regional Planning Council presented a check to the City of Pensacola for $250,000 for the Brownsfields Program at the Community Maritime Park.
This program is to remove the pilings and submerged land in Pensacola Bay at Maritime Park. Before being purchased by the city in 2000, the park property historically served as a railroad freight terminal, with a commercial pier extending from the bulkhead.
Erected in the early 1900s, the Frisco Docks were completely destroyed in a 1966 fire, but more than 500 creosote-treated pilings remain submerged underwater. Contamination from polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, is also present.
Once the contaminants are removed, the property can serve as a platform for further economic development for Pensacola.
“This is a tremendous victory for the region and we are very excited about this grant award,” said Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward. “This grant will go a long way in helping us move forward with my vision to support the growth of Community Maritime Park.”

Governor's report: Pensacola added nearly 2,000 new jobsGovernor Rick Scott's office released a report that found the Pensacola area added 1,900 new private-sector jobs in the past year.
On top of that, the area’s unemployment rate is down 0.4 percent from a year ago. It now sits at 3.9 percent.
According to a news release from Governor Scott's office, construction and leisure/hospitality were the industries with the highest growth. Both industries each added 1,000 jobs in the last year. Our area had 4,543 job openings, including 1,180 openings for high-skill, high-wage STEM occupations.

Queen B and Eagle Kuantan made stops at Port of Pensacola this week.
Queen B, a 435-foot container ship operated by World Direct Shipping, was in port on Monday to load 68 containers of cellulose for export to Mexico. One of World Direct Shipping’s two ships, Queen B or Falmouth, calls at the Port of Pensacola every Monday, providing local and regional shippers direct shipping service to the Mexican ports of Tampico, Tuxpan and Coatzacoalcos.
Eagle Kuantan is an 800-foot tank ship operated by Malaysia International Shipping, formerly AET Tankers. It is calling at Offshore Inland Marine’s offshore and subsea service center for 10 days for hull inspections and certifications in compliance with the American Bureau of Shipping’s requirements for periodic inspection of vessel hulls either via dry-docking or UWILD (underwater inspections in lieu of dry-docking). While in Pensacola, divers from a certified vessel inspection company will be deployed to complete a thorough inspection of the vessel’s hull to assure the its operational condition and seaworthiness.

Located at the former Blount School property, Garden District Cottages will be comprised of 26 new homes inspired by classic details blending the Old South, Creole and Antebellum Architectural styles. There are four different floor plans of single family residences to choose from.
The property, located at 113 N C Street, is rich with history. In 1906, it was designated by the city as residential use. It turned into a school instead. W.A Blount Junior High flourished for decades until a decline in enrollment due to aging Baby Boomers forced the school to close. There were efforts to revitalize the property, but none came to fruition.
The City purchased the property using mostly grant funding. The buildings were inhabitable and had to be torn down. Now, it is back to the original plan— build a neighborhood. ParSco is helping make that happen. The construction company is moving into the permitting stage for its model home and designs. |
