WEEK 5: Street resurfacing and natural gas infrastructure upgrades

Construction crews took advantage of nice weather last week to make progress in the citywide street resurfacing program. The work is currently focused in West Pensacola and some sections of downtown. In all, more than 1800 city blocks, or approximately 119-miles of paved streets, will be rehabilitated to deliver a smoother, safer ride and improve the appearance of Pensacola’s neighborhoods and commercial districts.

Residents and property owners are reminded to remove vehicles parked on the street before work begins. They are being notified by mail of work planned to begin in their area. Then, 24 to 48 hours in advance of work on a street, construction personnel are going door-to-door to distribute reminders.

Potential impacts associated with the resurfacing work may include:

Congestion from construction vehicle traffic.
Noise, dust, and vibration.
Temporary street closures and detours.
On-street parking restrictions.

Pensacola Energy’s natural gas distribution system is also being modernized. Construction crews are currently working in the South Palafox and Downtown West sectors of the city to replace aging, inefficient cast-iron pipes with new, medium density polyethylene piping. The entire program calls for replacement of more than 46-miles of underground natural gas lines.

When work is completed, natural gas consumers will have a system that is more efficient, reliable, and safe. In addition, the new system will deliver at 60 pounds of pressure, versus the current 0.25 pounds. This improvement will allow for use of more and larger gas appliances such as whole-house generators, tank-less water heaters, and pool heaters.

Potential impacts associated with the natural gas system improvements include:

Temporary lane closures, though sporadic and few.
Sidewalks blocked by construction equipment and excavation work.
On-street parking restrictions.
