Groundbreaking for General "Chappie" James Museum and Flight Academy The City of Pensacola and the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 for the General Daniel “Chappie” James, Jr. Museum and Flight Academy Project, a public and private partnership in the Eastside Redevelopment Area. This city-owned site is the historic home of America’s first African-American Four Star General, Daniel “Chappie” James Jr., and was donated to the city by the James family. The residence, which was built in 1909 by Chappie James' father, David James Sr., is located at 1608 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.The museum will be established and operated by the Chappie James Museum of Pensacola, Inc., a non-profit organization. The Chappie James Youth Flight Academy organization will provide Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) tutoring and youth flight academy workshops to help prepare community youth for potential careers in the field of aviation. Mayor Hayward Viewpoint: Building a Sense of OptimismDallas Mayor Mike Rawlings tells a story about asking a successful investor whether, in trading parlance, Dallas was a buy, a sell, or a hold. It came to him as no surprise that the investor enthusiastically replied, “A buy”.
Looking back at all that we have accomplished in the last six years and seeing what is happening all around the city I am not surprised that people say the same thing about Pensacola. When city residents were asked in the most recent Haas Center survey, “Is the city on the right track?”, their answer was a resounding “yes”.
The signs of success are all around us – the successful opening of the new downtown YMCA, our designation by Where to Retire magazine as a top retirement destination and our being home to one of the nation’s top-rated high schools are just a few. That’s impressive stuff, but it’s the projects and possibilities on the horizon that give me a real sense of optimism for Pensacola. In the next two years the physical landscape of our city will be enhanced by a number of projects.

Southwest Launches New Weekend Service to Denver and Daily Service to Kansas City
Pensacola International Airport Gains Ten Weekly Flights this Summer.
Southwest Airlines will offer expanded services and routes this summer at Pensacola International Airport (PNS). New, non-stop weekend service to Denver International Airport (DEN) will run June 3-August 14, offering flights on Saturdays and Sundays. Southwest is also renewing its seasonal service to both Kansas City International Airport (MCI) and Dallas Love Field (DAL) with an increase in frequency: daily non-stop to Kansas City; and twice Saturday and once Sunday flights to Dallas. Southwest service to and from Pensacola International Airport is now 34 flights per week. Passengers can begin booking flights today at http://www.southwest.com.
“The new non-stop service to Denver and the return of non-stop service to Dallas and Kansas City is great news and a sign that Southwest Airlines, like so many other businesses, is confident and optimistic about Pensacola’s continual growth,” said Mayor Ashton Hayward. “These additional routes will increase our exposure to the West and Midwest while strengthening the connection between the 2nd and 3rd most populous states in the country. We have built a tremendous relationship with Southwest Airlines over the past three years and we look forward to making it even better in the years to come.”

Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ParadeOn Monday, January 16th, the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade kicks off at 11am in Downtown Pensacola. Come join the Pensacola community as the celebration parades down Palafox St. in honor of Dr. King’s birthday. Break out the lawn chairs, gather up the family, and enjoy the festivities. The parade will last until 3pm, and is free to the public.

Bay Bluffs and Chimney Park CleanupsCome join the Pensacola Scenic Highway Foundation, Earth Ethics, and Ocean Hour on Saturday, January 14th for a two location clean up on Scenic Highway. Location one is Bay Bluffs Park on Scenic Highway at Summit Blvd. The second location is 2 miles north, at Chimney Park on Scenic Highway at Langley Ave. Buckets, grabbers, gloves, and trash bags will be supplied. All that is needed is helping hands. Sign-in is at 8:45am and the clean up is from 9:00 am to 10:00 am. Please bring water, bug spray, and sunscreen as needed. Roger Scott Team Wins Women's 6.5 Tennis Championship in OrlandoUnited States Tennis Association Florida League Sectionals christened their new USTA National Campus over the weekend, and crowned four teams as Combo 18 & Over 6.5/8.5 champions, one group being Pensacola's very own Roger Scott team.
Teams battled in men’s and women’s doubles-only 6.5 and 8.5 divisions on the hard courts of the USTA National Campus, where the weather turned into an additional adversary for our Pensacola players. Beautiful weather on Friday gave way to challenging conditions on Saturday and Sunday as a cold front brought in rain and chilly temperatures, but that didn't stop the women's team.
Pensacola's Ingrid Hewette and Elena Sise placed first in the doubles championship. Rachel Trahan and Melissa Paravalos, also from Roger Scott, placed third.

Arbor Day CelebrationJoin the celebration of Florida's Arbor Day on Friday, January 20th with a tree planting, proclamation, and tree giveaway from 10am to 12pm at Camelot Park (7705 Gallahad Road, Pensacola, FL 32514) in Pensacola.
