The 2020 Census is Coming: Make Sure You're Counted!

The City of Pensacola and Escambia County are encouraging all residents to participate in the 2020 Census to ensure everyone in the community is accurately counted during the nation's once-in-a-decade headcount of every person in the United States.

The results of the 2020 Census will help determine how hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding flow into communities including the City of Pensacola and Escambia County every year for the next decade. That funding shapes many different aspects of every community throughout the U.S., from highway planning and public transit to educational programs and housing assistance.

Some important Census dates include:

March 12 - 20: Households will begin receiving official Census Bureau mail with detailed information on how to respond to the 2020 Census online, by phone, or by mail.
March 30 - April 1: The Census Bureau will count people who are experiencing homelessness over these three days. As part of this process, the Census Bureau counts people in shelters, at soup kitchens and mobile food vans, on the streets, and at non-sheltered, outdoor locations such as tent encampments.
April 1: Census Day is observed nationwide. By this date, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. Once the invitation arrives, you should respond for your home in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail. When you respond to the Census, you'll tell the Census Bureau where you live as of April 1, 2020.
April: Census takers will begin visiting college students who live on campus, people living in senior centers, and others who live among large groups of people. Census takers also begin conducting quality check interviews to help ensure an accurate count.
May - July: Census takers will begin visiting homes that haven't responded to the 2020 Census to help make sure everyone is counted.
December: The Census Bureau will deliver apportionment counts to the President and Congress as required by law.

Deadline Extended Until TOMORROW for Public Comments on CRA Urban Core Projects

The deadline has been extended for the public to provide comments on Pensacola Community Redevelopment Agency projects being reviewed for funding through the Urban Core Redevelopment Refunding and Improvements Revenue Bond, Series 2019.

The public may submit comments through Friday, Feb. 7 at 5 p.m.

Comments may be submitted via email to CRA Administrator Helen Gibson at hgibson@cityofpensacola.com or in person at the CRA Office, located on the third floor of City Hall, 222 W. Main St. Comment cards are available at the front desk at City Hall.

Langley Avenue Stormwater Conveyance Project Construction to Begin Feb. 11

Construction of the Langley Avenue Diversion Box and Stormwater Conveyance Project will begin Tuesday, Feb. 11, part of an ongoing three-phase project to directly benefit the water quality of Escambia Bay and Pensacola Bay while also enhancing the Gaberonne Swamp ecosystem.

The project will require a section of Langley Avenue between Spanish Trail and Scenic Highway to be closed to through traffic beginning Monday, Feb. 17, with traffic detouring from Langley Avenue to Creighton Road via Spanish Trail or Scenic Highway. Detour signs will be posted in the area. Residents will be provided access to their property during construction.

The roadway is expected to reopen by Thursday, March 19, weather permitting.

Construction of the stormwater project is expected to take approximately 75 calendar days to complete, weather permitting.

Mayor Recognizes City Employees at Monthly Award Ceremony

Mayor Grover Robinson presented awards to City of Pensacola employees during the monthly mayoral recognition ceremony on Jan. 31, which is an opportunity to highlight members of the city's team for their service and accomplishments. During the ceremony, the Pensacola Police Department's Officer of the Year was announced, with the award going to Officer Mary Williams-Green, School Resources Officer. Congratulations to all employees who were recognized for their dedication and hard work!

Veterans, Register Now for PGA HOPE Golf Lessons

Osceola Golf Course has partnered with PGA HOPE, Helping Our Patriots Everywhere, to offer six weeks of golf instructional sessions on Tuesdays beginning March 17.

The PGA of America and local PGA Professionals are working closely with the VA system across the country to assist veterans in their transition. PGA HOPE introduces golf to veterans with disabilities to enhance their mental, social, physical and emotional well-being.

Sessions are taught by local PGA professionals with assistance from trained volunteers and include clubs and equipment, training aids, range balls and weekly golf course access.

Session Schedule: Tuesdays, March 17-April 28 • 9-11 a.m.
Graduation Day: Tuesday, April 28
