Don't Forget: Sanitation Pickup Changes Coming Monday

Sanitation pickup days will be changing for some City of Pensacola Sanitation customers beginning Monday, Jan. 6, 2020 as the city streamlines operations to serve customers more efficiently.

What’s changing Jan. 6:

Garbage, yard waste and recycling will be picked up on your current garbage pickup day, with the exception of customers who currently receive garbage service on Fridays.
Customers whose garbage is currently picked up on Fridays will now receive all services on Wednesdays (garbage, recycling and yard waste).

These changes apply to City of Pensacola Sanitation customers only (black garbage can and tan recycling can). Customers will be receiving postcards in the mail with their pickup day.

The changes will simplify services for residents, allowing them to place garbage, recycling and yard waste curbside on the same day for pickup. Combining customers’ pickup days will also streamline City of Pensacola Sanitation’s routes, making operations more efficient and reducing service time for customers.

Need to Dispose of Your Christmas Tree? Use One of the City's Drop-Off Sites Now Through Jan. 31

The City of Pensacola is offering several Christmas tree collection sites now through January 31. City Sanitation customers can also leave their tree curbside to be picked up on their normal yard waste pickup day.

Please remove all decorations before dropping off your tree or leaving it at the curb.

Drop-off sites are as follows:

Summit Boulevard, next to old Fire Station 3
East Maxwell Street underneath I-110
Bill Gregory Park near the back of the park, dead-end of “W” Street and Navy Boulevard

City 'Keep the Wreath Green' Ends with One Red Bulb

The Pensacola Fire Department ended its annual "Keep the Wreath Green" Fire Safety Campaign with one red bulb, representing one residential structure fire with damage in city limits during the month of December.

The annual campaign is a partnership with Escambia County Fire Rescue with a goal of reducing the number of fires by promoting simple, life-saving holiday safety tips each day in December.

During the month-long campaign, 5-foot wreaths were on display at five city fire stations and 18 county fire stations, with wreaths also placed outside of the Ernie Lee Magaha Government Building downtown, Pensacola City Hall and Cordova Mall. Each time firefighters responded to a residential fire with damage, a green bulb was replaced with a red one to remind citizens of the dangers posed by fires in residential homes.

In 2018, two bulbs were changed to red on city wreaths, and in 2017, seven bulbs were changed to red.

"We are glad to see the number of red bulbs trending downward in recent years during this campaign, which we believe is a testament to our residents practicing fire safety throughout the holiday season," Pensacola Fire Chief Ginny Cranor said. "Our hope is that residents will continue to practice fire safety every day and most importantly, make sure they have working smoke alarms in their homes to potentially save their lives in the event of a fire."

Let Us Hear from YOU: Take Our Annual Resident Satisfaction Survey by Jan. 10

The deadline has been extended for the City of Pensacola’s annual resident satisfaction survey, in order to provide city residents additional time to complete the survey and let their voices be heard.

The new survey deadline is Friday, Jan. 10. City residents are encouraged to complete the anonymous survey online at uwf.edu/HaasResidentSurvey. Some residents have also received a postcard in the mail prompting them to complete the survey.

The survey asks residents about their satisfaction with a variety of city services and facilities, including street lights, sidewalks, neighborhood safety and more, also prompting participants to rank their top priorities for the City of Pensacola.

Mayor Grover Robinson Congratulates UWF on National Championship Victory

Mayor Grover Robinson was joined by special guests at his weekly press conference Monday, Dec. 23 to celebrate the University of West Florida Football's NCAA Division II National Championship win, which is a history-making achievement for UWF Football.

"It was a total team victory, and I think they just exemplified who we are in Northwest Florida," Mayor Robinson said.

UWF President Dr. Martha Saunders and UWF Football Coach Pete Shinnick joined Mayor Robinson to highlight the victory.

"On Saturday night, when I followed that football team off the plane at Pensacola Airport, my heart was so full," Dr. Saunders said. "Because I knew how very long and hard the road to the championship had been for them, and for our coaches and for our staff. I knew the sacrifices they had made, and how very well they represented this university and this community."

"I couldn't be prouder of our team, couldn't be prouder of just what Pensacola has meant to us, and the support we've had," Coach Shinnick said.

Save the Date: Roaring ’20s Senior Beauty Pageant Happening Feb. 21

Summer Vista Assisted Living Community, Home Care Solutions, Assisted Living Locators, Regency Hospice and Bayview Senior Center will host a Roaring ’20s Senior Beauty Pageant Friday, Feb. 21 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sanders Beach-Corinne Jones Resource Center, located at 913 S. I St.

The pageant will crown Ms. Senior Pensacola, the gracious lady who best exemplifies the dignity, maturity and inner beauty of all seniors in Pensacola. Heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served, and community resources and organizations will be onsite.
