Lawrence Powell Selected as City
The City of Pensacola has selected Lawrence Powell to fill the Neighborhoods Administrator position, responsible for a variety of duties related to the Office of Neighborhoods.
Powell’s anticipated start date is Monday, July 15, and he will work under the direction of the Mayor and City Administrator.
"Our vision and goal is to get City Hall more active in working with neighborhoods and neighborhood associations to make each corner of our city better," Mayor Grover Robinson said. "I think Lawrence is the right person for this position as he brings passion and experience from his involvement with CNAPP, and I am excited to have him on the team."
A Pensacola native, Powell graduated from Troy University with a master’s degree in educational leadership, the University of West Florida with a bachelor’s degree in social work and from Pensacola Junior College with an associate’s degree in liberal arts.
Powell co-founded Iron Sharpens Iron Academy, where he serves as an instructor and administrator. The academy focuses on saving young men from the judicial system through education and intervention. He also serves as the pastor of C.O.R.E. Ministries and is a minister at Good Hope A.M.E. Church in Pensacola, as well as Rivers of Life Ministries.
In his new role as the Neighborhoods Administrator, Powell’s responsibilities will include serving as a liaison between the City of Pensacola, nonprofit agencies, neighborhood groups and other community stakeholders, along with providing recommendations for long-rage community development programs.
“I’m really looking forward to being a team player and a collaborative spirit, not only within the staff, but within the community at large,” Powell said. “When you’re dealing with our neighborhoods, it has to be a relationship of transparency and integrity, because our citizens depend on our city government to take care of them, to hear them and respond to them.”
Powell stays very active in the community, serving or having served in numerous capacities including vice president of Council of Neighborhood Association Presidents of Pensacola, president of Collaboration of Community Organizations, president of Future Leaders of Warrington, and chaplain for Movement for Change.
He served in the U.S. Army, with 20 years of active duty service including deployment to Baghdad and a stateside assignment to the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. before retiring as a Major and returning home to Pensacola.
“What brought me back to Pensacola was obviously family, but then of course the climate and the culture that caters not only to the military, but caters to its own residents by way of affordability, traffic management and beautiful beaches,” Powell said. “And all of those things that attract tourists are what attracted me back to Pensacola. So I think we have to continue to do all we can to improve the quality of life in our city and as it connects with our county.”
Powell is married to Charletha Powell, Ph. D., who supports him in his community service endeavors. He is the father of a blended family, which includes Korana, Dimitri, Kiersten, and Christian, and he is also the grandfather of Amir Smith.
Powell said he’s looking forward to joining the City of Pensacola team and working to ensure that no citizens are left behind as the city continues to grow and progress.
”I’m really excited about being a conduit that will continue to build and maintain relationships between the City of Pensacola, the Mayor’s Office, and our neighborhoods,” Powell said.
