Southern Recycling Fire Update
Pensacola Fire Department responded to a fire last night at Southern Recycling, 1000 S. Myrick St. The call was dispatched approximately 8:21 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15.
Multiple crews responded, arriving on scene to heavy black smoke and flames showing. Engines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and ladder 11 responded, along with the PFD Fire Boat and PFD command staff.
As of this morning (Wednesday, Aug. 16), the fire is 99% extinguished. Three engines and a ladder truck remain on scene. Due to the nature of the fire and the compacted cars, remaining crews are putting out hot spots to ensure they don’t have to return to the scene.
One firefighter was treated on scene by Escambia County EMS for minor, operational-related injuries.
Florida Department of Environmental Protection was notified and responded to evaluate potential environmental impacts.
The PFD Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire, but the cause will likely be undetermined due to the nature of the fire and the level of damage.
