Gulf Power and the City of Pensacola are expanding their clean energy partnership with the installation of SolarZones at two recreational facilities on the east and west side of the city.
The SolarZones feature a table with benches and provide shade and charging stations to the public at Roger Scott Tennis Center and Osceola Municipal Golf Course.
“These fun and innovative SolarZones are practical and useful while allowing the public to experience solar technology at work,” said Rick Byars, Gulf Power external relations manager. “The solar panels have two functions: They provide shade while also soaking up the sun’s rays to energize a battery that powers the charging stations and nighttime lights.”

SolarZone features:
- Seating for up to eight people with the ability to remove one bench for ADA access.
- A 1.8-kilowatt solar panel that has the capacity to generate about 2,700 kilowatt hours of electricity a year, enough solar energy to charge four wireless mobile devices and LED lighting through the night on a daily basis.
- Weatherproof outlets for laptop charging.
- QR code to access information about the benefits of Gulf Power’s solar trees, zones and car canopies, and our large-scale solar energy centers that are in service and in development across Northwest Florida.
The goal of the SolarZones is to provide a place for the golf and tennis players, or their spectators or anyone using the recreational facilities to congregate, charge their smart devices and get a break from the sun at the same time,” Byars said.
These SolarZones are also part of how Gulf Power, as part of Florida Power & Light Company, is increasing ways to harness zero-emissions energy from the sun that keeps costs down for customers and keeps the region beautiful for everyone. SolarZones don’t feed solar to the electric grid, and they don’t use power from the grid to operate. They showcase Gulf Power’s commitment to delivering renewable energy for a more sustainable energy future.
The SolarZones come on the heels of Gulf Power and the City of Pensacola partnering to install solar trees and solar parking canopies in downtown Pensacola. Additional Gulf Power solar projects in Northwest Florida include:
- Solar parking canopies in the parking lots of the Corrine Jones Resource Center at Sanders Beach and at One Palafox Place in Pensacola
- Two solar trees at the corner of Main and Reus streets in downtown Pensacola, at the crosswalks for city hall and the Wahoo Stadium
- Two solar trees at HarborWalk Village Boardwalk in Destin
- One solar tree at the Newman C. Brackin Wayside Park boardwalk in Fort Walton Beach
- A solar tree is planned for Washington County’s DeSoto Administrative building in Chipley.
Gulf Power is working to bring more solar trees, parking canopies and solar zones — solar tables with charging stations — to more areas across the region as the company continues to develop more large-scale solar energy centers.
