[ARCHIVED] World AIDS Day recognized today

Today being World AIDS Day gives us another opportunity to unite in the fight against HIV/AIDS, show our support for people living with HIV/AIDS and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day, held for the first time in 1988.

World AIDS Day is important because it reminds the public and Government that HIV/AIDS has not gone away – there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education.

"I believe education is critical -- investment in education will alleviate the continuing stigma and prevention of HIV/AIDS," Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward said. "Our society has come a long way in the past three decades with new treatments and treatment alternatives, discussion, research, and personal stories in the media have helped pave the way for increased awareness."
