The City of Pensacola Parks and Recreation Department has been awarded a $2,000 grant from Fish Florida to provide educational opportunities for children through the department’s Outdoor Pursuits program. Fish Florida is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote public awareness and encourage the protection of marine fisheries and coastal habitats.
The grant will be utilized for field trips and fishing education programs throughout the upcoming school year as well as 2016 summer camps. The Outdoor Pursuits Program offers a basic and advanced fishing camp in the summer where children receive classroom instruction and hands-on fishing experience at various locations throughout Pensacola. This summer over 50 kids have participated in the basic and advanced fishing camps.
“Teaching our younger generation about the outdoor resources they have here in Pensacola and getting them out in those environments to be active is the cornerstone of the Outdoor Pursuits program. The grant from Fish Florida will be instrumental in allowing us to expand that program into the school year for out-of-school times and weekend events,” said Tim Land, Outdoor Pursuits and Volunteer Coordinator.
