On Friday, September 22, 2017, the Gulf Coast Veterans Advocacy Council in conjunction with the Salvation Army will host a stand down for homeless veterans. A stand down is an event that allows homeless vets to take care of personal hygiene, enjoy a warm meal, receive medical and dental care, and address other basic needs, including camaraderie, in a safe environment. The concept is modeled after Vietnam War-era Stand Downs, which provided a safe retreat for units returning from combat.
