Hitzman-Optimist Park Athletic Fields
Coming soon to Hitzman-Optimist Park, the City of Pensacola is creating more space for our expanding youth soccer program! Through a land-swap agreement with the YMCA of Northwest Florida, the city has acquired the property adjacent to Hitzman-Optimist Park which was formerly the home of the Northeast Pensacola YMCA. Site prep and demolition began in December 2019 on the old YMCA and construction is expected to begin in early 2020.
New park features will include:
- Three, full-size soccer fields, capable of accommodating multiple youth games.
- Multi-use greenspace
- Bathroom & Concession and equipment/storage buildings
- Parking area with 110 additional spaces
- Walking loop
- Landscape berms and storm swales that will be planted with native vegetation
- Unpaved, overflow parking area
- Additionally the City is addressing traffic on Langley Avenue with traffic calming measures.
So what will it look like when it's finished? Here's a concept drawing to get an idea of how the new area of the park will be laid out.

BAYVIEW RESOURCE CENTER
Construction began on the replacement Bayview Resource Center in February 2019. Bayview Resource Center will be an exciting new addition to Bayview Park. The facility, which replaces the former community center that was demolished in 2015, will provide more accessible uses and waterfront access for the community to enjoy. The building is designed to be an active and highly social building that also reinforces the importance of Bayou Texar as a natural asset, and supports continued improvements of and around Bayou Texar.
The community center portion of the facility will include a large event space which can be separated into two smaller event spaces and staff offices. A large open lobby welcomes guests to the facility and there are multiple decks and balconies offering sweeping views of the waterfront. There is also space for storage of kayak, SUP, and rowing sculls to provide a home for paddle sports and non-motorized water activities. There will also be indoor and outdoor access to restrooms.
The Bayview Senior Center will remain in its current location adjacent to the new community center and will see relief from program crowding as well as improved access to parking. Construction is expected to be complete late summer 2020.
Project Budget: $6.5 million

Woodland Heights/Highland Terrace Park Parking Improvements
The City recognized the need to get parked vehicles out of Berkley Drive and provide for additional parking at the Woodland Heights Resource Center located at 111 Berkley Drive Pensacola, FL 32521. To address this issue, the City plans to construct 45 new asphalt paved parking stalls along with 3 small stormwater ponds to accommodate for the increase in impervious area. Some of these parking stalls will be interior to the site while some will be in the right of way. This project is currently in the permitting process and will go out to bid in early 2020.

BAYVIEW SENIOR CENTER RENOVATION
The Bayview Senior Center just completed renovations, which began in fall, 2018 and was expected to be complete in late winter or early spring, 2019. The original renovations to the facility included new restrooms to meet Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility standards, new tile flooring, safety handrails and interior painting. After work commenced on the project, contractors uncovered hidden water damage and therefore, the project timeline and budget was amended to allow for the additional work.
The Bayview Senior Center is reopening on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 with a limited schedule and full programming and rentals will resume when the Bayview Resource Center and new parking lot are completed.
