West Florida Genealogy Library

West Florida Public Library System is pleased to announce the opening of the West Florida Genealogy Library!  We are now located at 5740 North Ninth Avenue, on the corner of College Boulevard.  Visit us Tue–Sat 10 am – 6 pm  (850) 494-7373.

The West Florida Genealogy Library houses a collection of Local History, Genealogical and Native American resources and contains the West Florida Genealogical Society collection.  Library staff and volunteers from the West Florida Genealogical Society are available to assist patrons with genealogical or local history research.

Special collections
Our special collections focus primarily on the southeastern states, though the northern, midwestern and western states are represented. The collection will continue to grow in response to patron demand.

Pensacola News Journal
Local newspapers are a great source for both Genealogy and Local History research.  Please note that back issues and microfilm can be found at the West Florida Genealogy Library.     Please call 1-850-494-7373.

Obituaries
To request an obituary from the Genealogy department, please call 1-850-494-7373.  Email requests may be directed to pvignolo@ci.pensacola.fl.us.

In order for our staff to fulfill your obituary or death notice requests, we will need to know the name of deceased person(s) and as accurately as possible the date of death and/or date the obituary was printed. Please keep in mind that because the Pensacola News Journal charges a fee to print obituaries, not all deceased persons will have a full obituary.

The fee for out-of-town obituary searches is $3.00. Escambia county residents are encouraged to come into the library and use our microfilm resources with staff assistance, when available.

We provide materials on:

Census records
City directories
Native American records
African-American genealogy
Military and pension records
State records and histories
Heraldry
European genealogy
Land records
Family histories
Hereditary Society records

Here are some of the new books we've recently added to the collection:

History of Butler County, Alabama, 1815 to 1885 by John Buckner Little

History of Bourbon County, Kansas through 1863 by T.F. Robley

New England Family Histories and Genealogies State of Massachusetts, Vol 1 & 2 by LuVerne V. Hall

Your research could help others!

Please consider bringing the findings of your genealogy research to the Library so we may include it in our files. Ask in the department for more information.
